Thank you for addressing this difficult topic. As a former binge eater turned therapist, I can confirm there's so much shame attached to this.
One thing that really helped me recover was to stop seeing my eating disorder as a problem to be fixed, and instead treat it as a symptom of deeper underlying trauma and hurts. It's an approach I recommend to all the clients and parents I work with, as it removes shame and opens people up to become curious about the root cause.
The reality is that eating disorders are our best attempt at trying to cope with deeper trauma since we lack the proper tools to do so. As twisted as it may seem, the eating disorder actually helps us survive.
So the question really becomes, not "how do I fix this eating disorder", but "how do I heal the underlying trauma". Once we do, the need for the ED goes away.
